Tooth Abscesses: The Facts

You might know that you should consider visiting a doctor if you have an infection. However, did you know that you should also consider visiting our dentist if you have an infection in your tooth? In fact, it’s very important that you visit us if you have an infection because your body won’t be able to prevent the infection on your own. Sadly, an infection can also lead to an abscess.

In reality, if an infection has spread to the center of your teeth, you could need root canal therapy. Luckily, despite what you may have heard, most patients who have had root canal therapy claim it’s comparable to having a cavity filled. If you decide to not have root canal therapy, your tooth could die. Furthermore, your infection could spread, which may cause an abscess.

Typically, your body can help you fight off an abscess. Sadly, because your infection won’t fade on its own, your body may struggle to fight off your abscess. Sadly, an abscess may be extremely painful. If you have an abscess, your gums may be sore or swollen and a painful lump could appear. Fortunately, there are several things you may be able to do to avoid an infection and, consequently, an abscess. We recommend scheduling regular appointments with us, brushing and flossing every day, and following a healthy diet.
